The Bangladesh public health system was moving to achieve an ICT-based environment for improving management efficiency and transparency. As part of this, when I was the Director of MIS-DGHS, we started work to transform the hospitals to have automation system. We started with three hospitals in 2011, viz., the National Institute of Kidney Diseases & Urology (NIKDU), the Government Employees’ Hospital and Azimpur Maternity Hospital and the Bangladesh Secretariat clinic. Later this number has increased year after year. As of February 2023, 59 government hospitals are automated. The system architecture is based on OpenMRS (Open Medical Record System – open source software), OpenERP (Open Enterprise Resource Management System – open source software), and OpenELIS (Open Electronic Laboratory Information System – open source software). The system is integrated and part of MIS-DGHS’s Health Enterprise Architecture, Shared Health Records, and the electronic registries, viz., geolocation registry, health facility registry, health provider registry, and client (population) registry).
