Oct 07, 2004-Mar 22, 2008: Professor & Head, Dept. of Biochemistry, National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD), Dhaka

NICVD is the only national institute and hospital for cardiovascular diseases. I, as in-charge of biochemistry laboratory of the institute, took the laboratory to a new height adding advanced machines and tests, quality assurance, efficiency, and computer-based test-reporting.

During my work, I added newer dimensions of modern teaching methodology in medical biochemistry aided by computer and internet technology and improved examination system for students.

My public health interests and skills grew in NIPSOM, which I proactively nurtured throughout my later careers. NIPSOM is the country’s national focal institute for producing postgraduate specialists in public health, where I deeply sharpened my depth and breadth of public health knowledge and skill in all public health domains. I served as Managing Editor of JOPSOM, the popular national public health journal. I opened country’s first MPH nutrition course while I was here.

As a popular teacher, I introduced innovations in teaching contents and teaching methodology, which students of that time still recall.

I established Medical Information Group (MIG), a non-profit organization to promote use of IT among health professionals and students and run computer-training programs for them and a non-profit free Internet access system, MEDINET in a time of no Internet service in Bangladesh. I launched country’s first health website (www.angelfire.com/ak/medinet) and moderated for longtime (1996-2001) an international discussion group, <mignet>.
